Minister Meets Barry Bookworms

18 Aug 2008

Education Minister Jane Hutt has visited Barry library in the Vale of Glamorgan to congratulate them on becoming one of Wales’ Reading Communities.

All authorities in Wales were invited to bid for two awards of up to £20,000 to become Reading Communities as part of National Year of Reading 2008. Barry and Llanelli were both successful in their bids.

Over the summer people living in the Reading Communities will be going to the polls to vote on their favourite books and in Barry a programme of events including creative writing, author visits, workshops have been organised to celebrate the joy of reading.

Jane Hutt said: " One of the greatest pleasures in the world is reading a good book.

" Across Wales through our National Year of Reading we want people young and old to discover a love for the written word. To show our commitment to this campaign I have recently awarded £220,000 to the Welsh Books Council to continue to lead and co-ordinate a calendar of events and activities during 2008.

"Reading skills underpin learning throughout life as well as improving career opportunities and broadening horizons. Both Barry and Llanelli are making huge efforts to encourage as many people as possible to see the positives within pages and they are to be congratulated."
