Who won a £100 and more?

12 Nov 2008

The Merched y Wawr National quiz was held in every region throughout Wales last week, and even though every team were eager to answer the questions and were aspired to win the £100, two branches hit the jackpot and won a £100 for their branch.

Over 230 teams competed in the quiz throughout Wales and Rhiwlas Branch in the Arfon Region and Pencader branch in the Carmarthen Region were joint first and won the cheque of a £100.

Merched y Wawr expressed their sincere thank you to the Welsh Books Council as part of the National Reading Year for their support this year, and for their generosity giving the successful teams additional prizes in form of book tokens.

As part of the quiz activities held in all the different regions many of the Merched y Wawr members had brought second hand books with them to exchange as part of a campaign to promote books to the members throughout Wales. All the books left over were given as a gift to charity shops all over Wales.

The National quiz is an important event in the Merched y Wawr yearly calendar and this year the quiz was revamped and for the first time ever the teams were given multiple choices as answers.

This year the quiz resembled the popular television quiz ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ the only slight difference was the prize money!

The quiz was sponsored once again this year by regions of Merched y Wawr.

The National Director of Merched y Wawr, Tegwen Morris said that the quiz had been a huge success and that the evening held at the different regions had been fun.

"Excellent! A successful evening all round. I was keeping in touch with all the regions on the phone, and was aware of the scoring. By ten o’ clock Friday evening we knew who had won. The quiz was great and everyone really enjoyed!

"Congratulations to Rhiwlas branch and Pencader branch, and also to Bro Ilar Branch in Cardigan for scooping the third prize and to all the other branches and clubs for competing and enjoying the Merched y Wawr National Quiz. It is inspiring to see that more teams compete every year. Thank you to the quiz masters, Mary Price, Catrin Stevens, Esyllt Jones and Mererid Jones for all their hard work," she said.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Radio Cymru for their coverage of the quiz as the results were announced by Gwenllian Crigg during the eleven o’clock news that evening," she added.

In the Rhiwlas branch team were Lynda Jones, Nia Jones, Annes Glyn and Iona Jones and in the Pencader team were Deci Evans, Sallie Ballamy, Sally Jones and Yvonne Griffiths .
