English Children
In Chatter Wood
A bit of a spooky one! By the award-winning illustrator of Welsh legends and stories, this tale of children out potato-picking is not quite what it seems. Are all stone circles like Stonehenge – or do some hold darker secrets?
Finding Minerva
A challenging novel for older readers – but gripping and imaginative. Set in a modern-day Britain which the Romans never left, it’s frightening and fast! A sort of spy-thriller with a Cold War twist!Dragon & Mousie and the Snow Factory
Simple fantasy involving a dragon, a mouse and a lot of fairy snowflakes, busy in the skies, in a cartoon style. Simple text.
Snow Spider, The
This remains a classic, and is well worth revisiting – or enjoying for the first time. A convincing everyday narrative is entwined with some of the great characters from Welsh tradition and fantasy.
Merlin Awakes
A picture book introduction to the legends which link King Arthur to Wales – with the addition of the theme of schoolboy bullying. Well-crafted and beautifully illustrated. A good Curriculum Cymreig read for lower juniors.
Black Bart’s Treasure
A rollicking tale involving the archetypal buccaneer Barti Ddu – who terrorised the coast in earlier days! A good read in a series of maritime escapes, which include The Bosun’s Secret and The Pirates of Thorne Island.Seal Children, The
A haunting picture book set on the west Wales coast - an imaginative reinterpretation of the silkie tales of long ago, with a lilting narrative and references to Pembrokeshire’s agricultural past. A lovely text for sharing.
Sharp Sheep
Tongue in cheek tale of horror about a flock of sheep who help a group of children staying with their aged grandparents save a farm from the dreaded tourist developers. Watch out for the phantom shepherd, Rhys the Fleece. A pacey read for juniors.Spellmakers
Magic creatures, magicians and witches make this retelling of half-remembered tales a satisfying read – and Graham Howells’ accompanying illustrations are bewitching. KS2 readers, but good to read aloud too.
Who’s Afraid of the Bwgan-Wood?
Schoolday adventures in a valleys’ community, involving a family of spirits from the local woodlands; a great introduction to the Tylwyth Teg , the fairy folk of Welsh legend. The first in a trilogy of solid reads for older juniors.Dragon Days: Stories & Poems
A host of immaculate dragon paintings by Brett inspire a range of stories and poems by distinguished writers from Wales. An excellent anthology for all ages - with something to suit everyone.
