FAQ

What is the National Year of Reading?
The National Year of Reading is a year-long celebration of reading in all its forms. It aims to help build a greater national passion for reading – among children, families and adults alike. The Year was launched officially on 13 March by Jane Hutt AM, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.

What is the purpose of the National Year of Reading?
The Year will aim to amplify the range and diversity of the literacy-based work that is already undertaken by schools, libraries, adult learning centres, prisons, trade unions, businesses and many other organisations. In addition, it will provide an unique opportunity to promote the ability of reading to change the lives of individuals and communities.

Who is running the National Year of Reading in Wales?
The Welsh Books Council was invited by the Welsh Assembly Government to coordinate the campaign, linking with key partners and organisations.

Is it a UK event?
There is a major campaign in England but not in Scotland or Northern Ireland. The campaign in Wales is a separate campaign but the Welsh Books Council has close links with the organisers in England and we are sharing ideas and information and working together as appropriate.

Who are the National Year of Reading team in Wales?
Delyth Humphreys, Coordinator (delyth.humphreys@wbc.org.uk)
Rhian Evans, Administrator (rhian.evans@wbc.org.uk)
